Are Candles Bad For Your Health

Updated: Jun 26, 2018

Some candles can be very toxic - avoid cheap ones

When we make sure we eat healthily and keep ourselves fit it can come as a great shock to think we could be breathing in toxic fumes............

There is nothing more relaxing or romantic than candlight filling the room with a gentle, flickering flame and wonderful perfumes, but you could be breathing in toxic fumes from the wax, wick or fragrance oils.

Look around the shops and you will find a multitude of candles from cheap to expensive to plain to exotic flavours but do you actually know what wax they are made of, what type of wick has been used or how did they get that wonderful, strong smell.

Regular, ordinary candles will probably be made of paraffin wax which creates highly toxic benzene and toluene – both are known carcinogens – a substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue and can be as harmful as inhaling secondhand smoke from cigarette smoke. They can also contain artificial dyes and fragrances.

Aroma Natural is often asked why their candles were much more expensive and the reason is we pride ourselves in using only pure natural wax, natural wicks and pure essential oils at a high percentage. All our candles came in gorgeous black boxes and satin ribbon. We also adhered to regulations with our labelling and safety advice.

Candles to avoid :

Cheap candles

Scented candles that are not naturally scented

Gel candles

Any candle that has lead in the wicks

Re-melted Yankee candle wax

Candles to buy :

Soya wax - made from soya bean oil

Rapeseed wax - made from rapeseed

Beeswax

Wicks should be made from natural cotton, paper or wood

The aroma should be essential oils or failing that a really good fragrance oil or aroma chemical
