When it comes to caring for a baby’s delicate skin, choosing the right soap is essential. Many commercial soaps contain harsh chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin. That’s why I love creating natural baby soap recipes that are gentle, nourishing, and free from synthetic additives. Making your own baby soap is not only rewarding but also allows you to control exactly what goes into the product your little one uses every day.
In this post, I’ll guide you through everything you need to know about crafting gentle soaps for babies. From understanding the ingredients to step-by-step instructions, you’ll feel confident making your own natural baby soap at home. If using ingredients like Sodium Hydroxide worries you we could make your baby soap in our Soap Making for Beginners course
Why Choose Natural Baby Soap Recipes?
Choosing natural baby soap recipes means you’re opting for products made with pure, simple ingredients that are kind to your baby’s skin. Babies have thinner skin than adults, which makes them more vulnerable to irritation and dryness. Natural soaps avoid harsh detergents, synthetic fragrances, and preservatives that can cause allergic reactions.
Here are some benefits of natural baby soaps:
Gentle cleansing without stripping natural oils
Moisturising ingredients like shea butter and coconut oil
Free from artificial fragrances and dyes
Eco-friendly and biodegradable
Customisable to suit your baby’s skin needs
By making your own soap, you can tailor the recipe to include soothing ingredients like oatmeal, chamomile, or calendula. These natural additives help calm sensitive skin and reduce redness.

Essential Ingredients for Gentle Baby Soaps
Creating gentle soaps for babies starts with choosing the right ingredients. Here’s a list of some of the best natural components to include in your baby soap recipes:
Oils and Butters: Olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, and sweet almond oil are excellent for moisturising and nourishing the skin.
Lye (Sodium Hydroxide): Necessary for the soap-making process (more on this later).
Distilled Water: Used to dissolve the lye safely.
Natural Additives: Oatmeal, chamomile, calendula petals, or aloe vera gel can soothe and protect delicate skin.
Essential Oils: Use mild, baby-safe essential oils like lavender or chamomile for a gentle fragrance. Avoid strong or potentially irritating oils, in fact I would say lavender and chamomile are the only ones really safe to use.
When selecting oils, aim for a balanced recipe that produces a soap with a creamy lather and lasting moisture. For example, olive oil provides gentle cleansing, while coconut oil adds fluffy bubbles.
Simple Natural Baby Soap Recipe Example
Here’s a basic recipe to get you started:
300g olive oil
150g coconut oil
50g shea butter
70.38g lye (sodium hydroxide)
190g distilled water
1 tablespoon ground oatmeal
10 drops lavender essential oil (optional)
This recipe creates 500g of mild, creamy soap that’s perfect for baby skin.

Is Lye Really Necessary for Soap Making?
You might have heard that lye is dangerous and wondered if it’s really necessary to use it when making soap. The answer is yes - lye is an essential ingredient in traditional soap making. It’s the chemical that reacts with oils and butters in a process called saponification, turning them into soap.
However, when used correctly, lye is completely safe. The key is to follow precise measurements and safety precautions. Once the soap cures, there is no lye left in the final product. It’s transformed into a gentle, cleansing bar and due to the chemical process glycerin is magically produced. Glycerin is usually used in all skincare products due to its humectant quality of attracting moisture from the air and locking it into the skin. Bonus!
If you’re new to soap making, I recommend starting with a beginner-friendly recipe and taking a workshop or class to learn the basics. For example, Aroma Natural's Soap Making for Beginners course offers hands-on guidance and expert tips to help you master the process safely.
Step-by-Step Guide to Making Your Own Gentle Baby Soap
Ready to make your own natural baby soap? Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to get you started with cold process soap making:
What You’ll Need:
Safety goggles and gloves
Digital kitchen scale
Heat-resistant mixing bowls
Stick blender
Soap moulds
Thermometer
Ingredients (oils, lye, water, additives)
Instructions:
Prepare your workspace: Make sure your area is clean, well-ventilated, and free from distractions. Put on your safety gear.
Measure ingredients accurately: Use a digital scale to weigh your oils, lye, and water precisely.
Mix the lye solution: Slowly add the lye to the distilled water (never the other way around) while stirring gently. This mixture will heat up quickly. Set aside to cool to about 32-45°C.
Heat the oils: Gently warm your oils and butters until fully melted. Let them cool to the same temperature as the lye solution.
Combine lye and oils: Slowly pour the lye solution into the oils. Use a stick blender to mix until the soap reaches "trace" - a pouring custard-like consistency.
Add additives: Stir in oatmeal, essential oils, or other gentle ingredients.
Pour into moulds: Transfer the soap mixture into your moulds and cover with a towel to insulate.
Cure the soap: Let the soap harden for 24-48 hours, then unmould and cut into bars. Cure the bars in a cool, dry place for 6 weeks to allow excess water to evaporate.
Making soap is a fun and creative process. Don’t worry if your first batch isn’t perfect - practice makes perfect!
Tips for Customising Your Baby Soap
One of the best things about making your own soap is the ability to customise it to your preferences and your baby’s needs. Here are some ideas to personalise your gentle baby soap:
Add soothing herbs: Infuse your oils with chamomile or calendula before soap making for extra skin benefits.
Use natural colourants: Try spirulina powder for a soft green tint or pink clay for a gentle pink.
Experiment with scents: Stick to baby-safe essential oils like lavender, chamomile. Use sparingly. The allowed amount is 3%, however, I would reduce this to 1-2%.
Create fun shapes: Use silicone moulds in cute shapes like stars or animals to make bath time more enjoyable.
Remember to always patch test new soaps on a small area of skin before regular use, especially for babies with very sensitive skin.
