Essential oils in skincare products - Part Two

If you are using essential oils in any of your skincare products or soaps and you hope to sell them you should be aware of the quantites that you are able to put into them, safely.


In my Blog, Essential oils in skincare products - Part One I outline how to use them safely, however, below is a quick list of the most common essential oils that are used in skincare and the percentages, by law, that can only be used in reduced amounts :


Anissed - Pimpernella Anisum - 0.2%

Anise (Star) - Illicum Verum - 0.15%

Basil (linalool CT) - CoA should be obtained - Ocimum Basilicum

Bay - CoA should be obtained

Benzoin (styrax, liquid resin) - 0.6%

White Birch - Betula Lenta - 0.1%

Carrot Seed - Daucus Carota - 0.5%

Cinnamon Leaf - Cinnamomum zeylanicum - 0.5%

Citronella (java, China, Vietnam sources ONLY) - 0.2%

Clary Sage - Salvia sclarea - 1%

Clove - bud and leaf - Eugenia Carophyllata?Szygium Aromaticum - 0.2%

Fennel - Sweet - Foeniclulum vulgare - 0.2%

Helichrysum/Immortelle - Helichrysum italicum - 0.5%

Ho Leaf - Cinnamomum camphora - CoA should be requested

Ho wood - Cinnamomum camphora - CoA should be requested

Lemongrass - Cymbopogon flexuousus - 0.74% on the body but 0.37% on the face and hands

Manuka - Leptospermum scoparium - 0.5%

May Chang - Litsea cubeba - 0.87 on the body but 0.43% on the face and hands

Melissa - 0.33%

Myrtle - Myrtus communis - 0.02%

Nutmeg - Myristica fragrans - 0.016%

Origanum - Origanum vulgare - 0.5%

Ravensara - Ravensara aromatica - 0.08%

Rose Absolute - Rosa damascena - 0.04% - full body and fragrancing use

Rose Otto Essential Oil - Rosa Damascena - 0.01% full body and 0.1% fragrancing use

Sage - Salvia officinalis - 0.4%

Ylang Ylang - extra, 1, 11 and 111 - Cananga odorata - full body - 0.8% but on the face and hands - 0.4%


If you are still unsure of the amount allowed, please go to the International Fragrance Association (IFRA)

Pennyroyal

Dill - leaf and seed

Caraway Seed

Tagetes
